Safety Valet Program: Volunteers Needed

We are in need of more volunteers for the 2011-12 school year. Many of our volunteers are moving on to Middle School.  You can help by making a difference in your child’s safety at the school.  The Safety Valet Program has helped to relieve traffic congestion and increase the safety of your child when he/she is dropped off at school.  We need more parents to help with this program in the mornings from 7:35 – 8:15 AM. As a volunteer you would work with two other parents 1 day a week or once every other week if you have a partner to split the shift with. You would be opening and closing the doors of cars as parents drive through the drop off zone, allowing children to get out of the car safely. Please contact Andrea Jayasekera at andreabert@sbcglobal.net if you are interested in helping.
Thank you, Andrea Jayasekera (Parent Coordinator)

A Red Carpet Thank You

The PTA wishes to thank all of the parent volunteers who helped with decorations, donations, set up, worked the event at various stations and helped to clean up.  A very special thank you to Jesson Duller for being a fabulous DJ and spinning everyone’s favorite tunes.  A huge thank you to Rosa Bender and Rosalba Mendez, our amazing Dance Chairs, who continue to put on fun dances for the entire family to enjoy.  A great time was had by all and we even had various celebrity sightings.  Thanks again for all of your support.

Admission is just $3 and children 4 and under are FREE.  If you come dressed as your favorite movie star or character you will receive a free ticket for our prize drawing. Be sure to be on time, you won’t want to miss a special performance by the Mt. Washington Glee Club at 6:00pm.  There will be plenty of food and drinks, great music and all of your friends in their celebrity get up.  Trust us, this will be the happening place to be this Friday.  It’s a wrap by 8:00pm.

Children need to be accompanied by an adult, and we ask that you respect that the playground is closed after school hours and don’t let your children play on the apparatus during the dance.

We are also in need of several things for the dance, please click here to sign up to donate an item or click here to volunteer at the dance.  See you there in your best glam.

Spring Planting Event, Thursday, May 12th 10:15am-2:00pm

Hello Mount Washington Community!!!

Thanks again for making the CA native garden planting such a success. The plants are growing in well and the Verbena and Salvia are even starting to bloom! If you have a chance, stop by and check them out.

We have a couple upcoming spring projects we'd like to invite you to participate in.

The Spring Planting event on Thursday, May 12th from 10:15AM-2PM or until all the planting is finished. We will focus on filling in the planting areas on either side of the driveway from the gate to the playground. Lucky us, a gardener will be digging all the holes the day before, so we get to do the fun part and plant the holes with Lavender, Rockrose, Rosemary and Sage. You will go home smelling like a French potpourri : )

Here are the tools we could use to get the job done: shovels, hand spades, gloves.

The MULCH IT! event will be held on Thursday, June 2, from 8:30AM-12PM or until all the mulch has been dispersed. We will be applying mulch to the planting beds. The mulch will be provided to us free of charge from the Sustainable Schoolyard division of the LAUSD. Mulch is great to use in gardens because it controls weeds, assists in retaining soil moisture and provides nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. Here are the tools we need for this event: wheelbarrows, rakes & thick garden gloves. Don't forget to bring water and snacks if desired.

Feel free to refer other parents here, who you think might be interested in helping. The more the merrier!!   Please RSVP to kf@kathleenferguson.com or 323.221.2248.

We hope to see you there!

Teachers appreciate being appreciated, for teacher appreciation is their highest award - William Prince

Thank you to all of our wonderful teachers and staff here at Mt.Washington for making sure our children have the best education they possibly can, even when things get tough.  You touch our children’s lives every single day and nurture their love for learning which is the greatest gift you can give them.  Our school is a shining example of what public education can be and should be for all children.  We are truly fortunate to have your dedication and passion behind our most valued treasures, our kids.  From the bottom of our hearts we THANK YOU!

FOMWS Night of Comedy Thank Yous

The Night of Comedy & Auction was a huge success with parents, our principal, teachers, school staff and community members coming together to support our school. The stars aligned and it was a beautiful night with great food, drinks, and entertainment in a breath-taking venue.

Much thanks to our small army of parents who volunteered that night and helped before, during and after the event. Our room reps for putting together the beautiful baskets.  All the parents who donated services or items for the Live and Silent Auction.  Parents who provided graphics, printing and catering services.  Our FOMWS Board for heading this event.  A very special Thank You to Nicole Thomas, Renee Frisbie, Anvi Kevany and our MVP (Most Valuable Parent) of the event, Sharen Steele Herran, for going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure a successful night.

We are in the process of tallying up how much funds were raised, so please stay tune for this information in next week's announcements.   We will be notifying people who won auction items, but didn't get the chance to take them home.  Items will be available in the Parent Center this week in the morning.

Thank you again for coming together for our children and your commitment to quality education.
